[sticky entry] Sticky: Welcome to Latitude South!

Seen those posts around saying "hey, internet-at-large, it's time for us all to do our Spring Cleaning" when it's the middle of autumn where you are? Are you resigned to the majority of your flist/rlist/dwircle muttering about the cold when you're dealing 45 degrees celcius and a bushfire is heading your way? This community - once it gets properly off the ground - may well be for you!

I always have a moment of glee in discovering someone else living in this lower half of the globe on DW. [community profile] latitude_south is a place where we can hang out, meet other Southern Hemisphereites, occasionally snark about Northerncentricity on the internet (hey, it's totally a word!) and just generally have fun. We'd love for you to join us!

A question of language

Because I'd like the input of people from this comm:

A poll on my journal regarding the definition of "urban" - explanations to come later.

Is it my settings?

A whinge...

WiiFit today decided to tell me that I need to keep wrapping up warm in this cold weather.

Really?

Today is bearable. Previous days have been AWFUL. I really don't need the WiiBitch telling me to "wrap up warm" in 35+ (Celsius) degree weather!

Now, what I'd love to know is, is it my settings? Or does the Wii just assume that all its users are in the northern hemisphere? I've noticed the snowflakes before this, and grizzled at them, but being told to wrap up warm when it's 35 - 40 out side? Really?

'Spirit Day'/"National" Coming Out Day

One BNA (Bitter Non-American [USA]-dwelling) response to the question of "Why do we need another day when we already have National Coming Out Day?"

-- Um, not all of us are in the US, you know?

Rant Herein, do not feel obligated to read )

Of interest to the Australian contingent of the southern hemisphere:

August 21 is Election Day, folks.

Writs are being issued on Monday; if you're not enrolled you have today and Monday to get your enrollment forms in to the AEC; if you're already enrolled but need to change your details, you have until Wednesday or Thursday, I think, to do that.

Hey folks - anyone looking for flatmates in Sydney's inner west?

Hi folks,

my flatmate [personal profile] kayloulee and I are looking for a flatmate to join us in our flat in Marrickville from midway through next month. We're looking for someone who's female, queer-friendly and financially stable.

We're both research students at USyd, pretty quiet; we love cooking, reading and geeky sci-fi.

Drop me a PM if you or someone you know might be interested, and I'll give you the details of the room/location/etc.

Southern Winter

I don't know about you guys, but here in Canberra it's freezing. Well, currently 8°, but it was -2° at 8am, and that's just not the sort of weather that inspires me to leave the house and go to work.

Plus it's the end of the financial year, so there's even more paperwork that usual at work, and pressure to get everything done by June 30th. (I work in retail and was there until after midnight doing stocktake last night.)

Not to mention that Australian houses tend to have pretty bad heating, so often it's too cold to type.

Meanwhile, people in my circle are posting about going on their summer vacations, and Interweave's Knitting Daily Newsletter has been all about the light cotton knits and things you can do when it's too hot to knit, and various other things I read seem to be all about summer and it doesn't matter if the people writing love it or hate it, because I love summer and it seems so far away right now.

So this is a post where people can write about what it's like at the end of June in their part of the Southern Hemisphere.

Because while it's cold here, I know it's not so bad in, say, Darwin at this time of year, and one of these winters I'll make it north for a few weeks of glorious sunshine.

To get things going - an intro post.

Hi, all!

Just to make sure there's at least a little content here at [community profile] latitude_south, I'm going to introduce myself. Feel free to do something similar in comments.

Name: [personal profile] adelheid or Heidi
Part of Southern Hemisphere: North-east Victoria, Australia
Pet hemispheric peeves: That the Christian litugical calendar is set up on the basis of day/night length and seasonal changes in the Northern Hemisphere, so that Easter and Christmas symbolism doesn't actually work for us; the Dixie Chicks' song "Cold Day in July" - even though I love the song, I always feel like saying "but the days are always cold in July. It's winter!"

Promote this community as much as you wish. I've sent out a bunch of invites to relevant people in my dwircle, and I'd love it if you'd let people know about it. :-)
